McNeil Band Week of 08/03/10

Good afternoon everyone,

Your students have hit quite a few achievements this week! As a team we learned almost all of the drill for the Opener! We also rehearsed and performed all the way through the Opener and Ballad in ensemble on Thursday night! We are excited to continue on this week as we put music and drill together.

Below are this week's announcements and schedule for the week:

Uniform Fitting Day

Thank you for everyone who came out and helped at Uniform Fitting Day last Saturday. It was incredibly successful and I think we only have a few students left to fit.

Summer Uniform Items Needed by 08/08

  • Black athletic shorts (NEW SUMMER UNIFORM). BOYS GIRLS (Girls can also choose to purchase the boys' 7-inch inseam shorts)

  • Socks (black low-cut ankle for summer uniform; tall black socks for full uniform)

  • Compression shorts to wear underneath your marching uniform. I recommend having at least 2 pairs for when we have Friday and Saturday performances.

Lessons

McNeil High School Band is fortunate to have an incredible private lesson staff to offer to our students. We cannot state strongly enough the importance of private lessons for every single musician in the program. Individual instruction with a professional is the biggest factor in a student's growth in playing ability. We hire the best teachers available and they have done an outstanding job. Everyone taking lessons from one of our teachers must enroll in the lesson program every year. Fill out the enrollment now if you have not done it for this upcoming school year.

McNeil Band Lesson Enrollment

Your payments are made directly to the teachers on a monthly basis, and our Band Boosters also commit a significant portion of their annual budget to assist families who need financial assistance for private lessons. Simply fill out the Online Lesson Enrollment form and submit your request for assistance and the Boosters will process your request.

MAJOR FUNDRAISER KICK-OFF UPDATE

Thank you so much being involved in the Fundraiser! In less than 2 Days we have raised over $19,000! We are almost at 25% of our fundraising goal! Please keep adding contacts to your RapidFundraising Page and asking for donations to your program!

Ways to keep up the momentum for donations:

  1. Encourage your team and your students to reach out to their contacts and Follow-Up.

  2. Send out the donation link to others in your network: https://rapidfundraising.com/mcneil-band/

  3. Check with employers: Many companies match their employees' donations to 501(c)3 organizations. This is an excellent way to double a gift's impact.

The Splits are following as of 08/02

Team Graham: 4561.47

Team Garza: 3624.21

Team Guard: 3515.37

And finally some reminders for Summer Band Rehearsals:

General Summer Band Reminders

  • If you have not submitted your physical yet please do ASAP! Submit your physical form to this link (they are good for two years, so only if you did not submit one last year). Here is a blank form to be filled out.

  • Show up with a full water jug! Every student will drink at least a gallon of water every day during summer band because of the heat and level of activity. Do not bring smaller water jugs.

  • Have electrolytes packets or tablets to add in to your water. These will really help keep students hydrated as they work hard and sweat during the day.

  • Instruments are needed each day. We will put them in our lockers during the morning and use them for the afternoon music rehearsal.

  • Lunch is required. Eating during Summer Band is not optional.

  • Hydrate for the next day. The water you take today affects your hydration tomorrow.

  • Eat a healthy breakfast before morning block - your meal should consist of a good protein and carb to keep you energized through the first part of the day.

  • AVOID DRINKING MILK IN THE MORNING (even in your cereal).

  • Proper footwear must be worn to summer band.  This means show up in good fitting athletic/running shoes.  Crocs, converse, boots, or any type of open toed shoe will not be allowed.  If students show up with incorrect footwear they will need to call home and have proper footwear brought to them.

  • Wear athletic clothing (shorts, t-shirt, athletic shoes (recommended list), and socks).

  • Bring a COOLING TOWEL! I can't express how beneficial these are in the heat. Neck fans are also great to keep students cool.

  • Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. We recently discovered these COOLING HATS that seem great. Everyone is required to wear a hat outdoors.

  • Students will need a yoga mat or beach towel for morning stretch and PT.
